Etherow Country Park Sailing Club

Read about our club

Etherow Country Park Sailing Club is a welcoming, family orientated sailing club, situated within the picturesque Etherow Country Park.

We sail on a mill lodge built over 100 years ago to serve the needs of Compstall Mill. Its water has been used to power the mill’s water wheel and to provide transportation of coal from a site further along the Etherow valley. The lake is over 700m long and because of its sheltered location offers a safe venue throughout the year for sailing activities.

We offer all year round sailing with typical activities including, free sailing, try sailing, learn to sail courses as well as regular club racing on Sundays and Thursday evenings, (spring through till autumn). We have a variety of boats in our secure dinghy park and our more popular fleets are Enterprises, Lasers, Toppers and Solos. We also have a number of club training boats made up from Wayfarers, Toppers, Qubas as well as an RS Feva and an Enterprise used for the national 24 hour race at Southport.

Our membership encompasses the whole community and comprises family groups, full adult members as well as juniors. We have a policy of making sailing accessible to all irrespective of their personal circumstances. Juniors applying for individual membership will require an adult sponsor in order to support the clubs safeguarding policy.

The well appointed clubhouse has heated male and female changing rooms, showers and toilets as well as a disabled toilet. Most of the club site is on one level and there is relatively easy wheelchair access to the club building along a shallow ramp in the main entrance.

The main club room has comfy seating, a bar and kitchen and is heated when required. The club room is a popular meeting area after a sail to have a social drink, chat about sailing or putting the world to rights. We also put on a number of social events throughout the year including barbeques, quizzes and even three course sit down meals.

We try to widen our sailing experiences by encouraging sailing at other venues. The annual 24 hour race is always popular and we have recently had a strong entry in the Birkett long distance race as well as the Anglesey Offshore race. We also have a few members who are brave enough to enter national and international championships.

Many of our sailors remain members for many years and see themselves as part of an extended family having formed life-long friendships with each other. If you are interested in joining us, you will be very welcome. Please pop in for a chat or contact us through our contact page.
